Sunderland set to release 1937 FA cup winning inspired home shirt

Sunderland AFC have officially confirmed via their social media channels that the club's 2026/27 home kit will be unveiled on 29th July 2026.

The new strip takes inspiration from Sunderland's iconic 1937 home shirt, commemorating the side that secured a historic 3-1 victory over Preston North End in the 1937 FA Cup Final. Released to mark the 90th anniversary of that famous triumph, the design blends heritage with modern styling.

A key feature of the shirt is the return of the shield surrounding the club crest, echoing the original 1937 design. However, unlike the historic blue shield, the modern version will be finished in black. The shirt also features a classic buttoned collar incorporating the club's traditional red and white stripes. The home kit will be completed with black shorts and red socks, staying true to Sunderland's classic look.

Supporters will get their first glimpse of the new kit in action during Sunderland's pre-season tour of the United States, when the Black Cats face Leeds United on Friday, 31st July 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for midnight (UK time), meaning fans will need to stay up late to watch the debut of the kit.  Sunderland's pink, Elvis-inspired away kit is instead expected to be worn during the pre-season opener against Liverpool.

The 2026/27 home shirt will launch without a front-of-shirt sponsor, as the club has yet to announce a commercial partner for the new campaign. Even if a sponsorship agreement is reached in the coming days, the shirt will remain sponsor-free at launch, allowing the uninterrupted red and white stripes to take centre stage.
